This is one of our favorite tricks for computer speed up.

There are a number of programs that automatically start when you boot up your PC. Unless you are a super-advanced user, many of them you’ll never use.

There’s a need trick in Windows where you can set these services to “Manual” — which means they won’t start up unless you specifically request them to be activated. Doing so will save valuable memory space and precious computer-processing time.

Step One is to get to the screen that lets you toggle them to Manual. From your desktop, right-click on your My Computer icon and select the Manage Option. Then click on Services and Applications. Then click on Services.

Step Two is to toggle to Manual the unneeded services. Below is an alphabetical list of services that, for most users, can be set to Manual. To set them to Manual, click on each service’s “Startup Type” (which may already be set to Automatic, Disabled, or Manual). After you click, select the Properties option, and then change the “Startup type” (via the drop-down menu) to Manual. IMPORTANT: Do NOT select Disable. Only select Manual.

Here’s the list of services to set to Manual:

* Application Management

* Cryptographic Services

* Distributed Transaction Service

* Error Reporting Service

* Fast User Switching Compatibility (only turn this to Manual if you are the only user of your computer)

* Indexing Service (you can safely set this to Manual if you don’t use Window’s search function often)

* MS Software Shadow Copy Provider

* NetMeeting Remote Desktop Sharing

* Portable Media Serial Number

* Remote Desktop Help Session Manager

* Remote Procedure Call (RPC) Locator

* Remote Registry (This is an an exception to the “no Disable” rule; this service is a Security Risk; DISABLE it ASAP.)

* Secondary Logon

* Task Scheduler (Only set this to Manual if you don’t schedule any unattended tasks.)

* Telnet

* Terminal Services

* Uninterruptible Power Supply

* WMI Performance Adapters

You can speed up your computer’s bootup time, as well as speed up your PC in general, by disabling a variety of programs in your Startup folder. It’s easy. Here’s how:

Run a program called “msconfig” by clicking on your Start button, then clicking on Run, then typing msconfig into the window and then clicking the OK button. Now click on the Startup tab in the window that pops up. For the vast majority of all users, you can safely uncheck the following options:

* Anything related to Adobe Acrobat (like Speed Launch Assistant). These programs will not be deleted and will still run. They just won’t be loaded for instant start when you boot your computer.

* “QTtask” — which is for Apple QuickTime. Again, the program will not be deleted. You’re just removing its instant start.

* “msmsgs” — which is Microsoft Messenger. Unless you regularly use it, you can disable it from loading at computer startup.

NOTE: After you make a change and reboot your computer, a dialogue box will pop up. It is essentially asking you if your computer is running ok. If you’re satisfied, click on the check box to disable the dialog box. If you’re not satisfied, run msconfig again and reactivate the program(s) you disabled.

HINT: You may want to disable programs one at a time. That way, you can see how your computer will work after each change. After you disable a program, reboot your computer and see how your PC runs. If you’re satisfied with the change, disable warning box

Enjoy your newfound PC speed and performance!

Sincerely, Mr Speed Up

Your computer’s memory is divided into “pages”, and are paged (swapped) as needed.

By optimizing how your computer’s memory is being used, you can speed up your computer and its performance. Here are the two simple steps:

(1) If you don’t know how much computer memory you have in your computer, go to your desktop and right-click on the My Computer icon. Then select Properties. Then select the General tab. Look in the text to see how much memory (RAM) your computer has.

(2) Now click on the Advanced tab.

* Under Performance, select the Settings button.

* Select the Advanced Tab again; then, under Virtual Memory, select the Change option.

* Highlight the harddrive (probably C:) that contains the Paging File.

* Click on the “Custom size” button (if it is not already selected)

* Take a look at the two associated text boxes.

* If you have 512 MB of RAM or more (as you noted in step one above), type into the two text boxes the amount of RAM you have.

* If you have less than 512 MB of RAM, don’t change the default settings in these text boxes.

NOTE: Every computer system is unique. If you don’t notice an improvement in PC speed, or if for some unlikely reason the system is running slower, go back to this section of your computer’s settings and select the “System managed size” button.
